Transman spy Charley MacElroy travels to Paris to help French authorities break up a Neo Nazi plot to scatter dirty bombs throughout the city. His older lover Electra comes along to study French, but she soon discovers Dickie Borque, an sinister British aristocrat with lavender hair, may be behind the plot. Charley, however, is not so sure. Meanwhile, she and Charley begin having love troubles when he suggests opening up their relationship to suit his pansexual desires. After discovering that he may have been fooling around with his attractive new male assistant, Electra moves out in a huff. Soon Charley is wandering the quays alone, trying to find the dirty bombs while wistfully longing for his love. Electra enlists the help of Dickie’s feisty eighty-something milliner, Odile, to break up the plot. But then suddenly, Electra disappears. Now Charley must search frantically for both the bombs and Electra amidst the cafes, conversation, and the gleaming, rainy streets of Paris in winter.

The collaborative team of Jack Harvey and Suzanne Falter have come up with a second sprightly novel in the "Transformed" series. This book has our protagonists Charley, the not-quite-completely transitioned CIA agent, and his beloved Electra, tangling with neo-Nazi terrorists in Paris. Charley has been restored to agent-on-probation status after sorting out his financial foibles from the previous "Transformed: San Francisco" (reviewed October 19, 2016), the reading of which led me to decide to continue the series. Electra, introduced to us as the "Society Dom" in the previous book, is now determined to become Charley's exclusive partner, both in life and in espionage. Regretfully, she has yet to obtain necessary training or security clearance, so is supposedly simply "along for the ride" as Charley is missioned to scope out a plot to plant cesium-laced dirty bombs around Paris, and hopefully thereby implicate and drive out tourists and/or immigrants from the Near East (this part is really a bit unclear). The "financier" of this plot is Dickie, Dame of Borque, a British ex-pat who abominates all tourists.

As the plot thickens, Electra inadvertently becomes involved with Dickie and thereby "infiltrates" the terrorist ring, much to the annoyance of Charley's superiors. Although, as was my criticism with the previous "Transformed" book, there are some problems with time-line and some major inconsistencies in the story, overall it is fun, amusing, and satisfactory in the culmination.

Transformed Paris A Quirky Romantic Thriller A Quirky Queer Spy Novel Volume 2 Suzanne Falter Jack Harvey 9780996998116 Books Reviews

Transformed Paris is the second quirky little thriller from Suzanne Falter & Jack Harvey, featuring a romance between a transgender man and his dominatrix girlfriend. It is an unusual sort of story, playing on tensions of both the political and fetish variety, but it is a lot of fun - even when it is trying to decide whether to rip out our hearts or leave them lodged firmly in our throats!

This time around, the action moves from San Francisco to Paris, with Charley and Electra a couple in turmoil. Although deeply in love with one another, Charley keeps pushing for a polyamorous relationship, which ultimately creates the divide that separates our heroes and drives their parallel stories to a shared climax.

Dickie, the lavender haired aristocrat with a debilitating case of shingles, is pure over-the-top, scene-chewing, villainy, while Odile, the elderly milliner who cares for her, is a sweet (and surprisingly noble) delight. Together, they add some much-needed levity to the story, which is entirely odd when you consider there is a Neo Nazi bomb plot afoot. Meanwhile, the heroes who should keep us upbeat and hopeful are so lost in their own relationship that Charley really becomes something of an opportunistic bystander, while Electra becomes a foolish (if well-meaning) victim.

There is a lot here to love, but also a lot to challenge readers. You need to be open to frank discussions about LGBT themes to become invested in the characters, and willing to see some humor in a terrible situation to appreciate the flow of the story. Transformed Paris is unorthodox, but an entertaining read.
This series has been wonderful, this book had some nice twists to it.
too much like the first one, rather preposterous plot twists
This series is such a treat! I really liked the first book, set in San Francisco, but gave it four stars because I like to be reasonably parsimonious. But having just finished TransformedParis, I'm going to five stars. The characters are so much fun, and I like the way the author toggles among them. It's always clear when a switch is made, and the timing is also good. The author makes good use of the lovely setting without getting off on a travelogue tangent. And the driving forces in the plot are extremely pertinent, from gender identity to immigration through to bigotry and bombs, the pages sparkle with relevance.

In the first book I was a little put off by the co-star, Electra the dominatrix. Her hardness was getting too predictable and one-dimensional. Reviews I read made me think she would just be more of the same, but not at all. Electra, though a bit of an extreme personality, goes through all the tortures and uncertainties that all modern-day women go through in relationships how strong and independent do we need to be? Is that the best thing? Is hardness and zero-tolerance the mark of strength or just a shallow consistency getting us nowhere? Is vulnerability the same as capitulation? If we try to compromise will we be inevitably taken advantage of? Must we choose between being true to ourselves and having a fulfilling relationship? In this book we get to watch her work these issues out within herself in what seems to me a very realistic way. Like all humans, she needs a little support and nudging along. The character of Odile provides this in a way that is seamless from the plot and that adds to the French atmosphere beautifully. Now I feel that I need to know co-star Charley better! So yes, naturally, I'll be following this series as long as it runs. Great job!
